This trek starts from Keylong and passing through Myar valley and part of Zangskar region of J&K terminates into Lahaul itself.

MYAR VALLEY EXPEDITION

Period July-September
Duration 12 days
Day-1

Keylong-Udaipur, 54 kms By bus.

At Udaipur visit Mrikula Devi Temple.

Day-2

Udaipur-Chimrat, 15 kms On foot.

From Udaipur to Shakoli follow the right bank of Myar nullah. At Shakoli cross the bridge to reach Chimrat on the left bank of the nullah. Valley broadens from Shakoli. Good patches of juniper trees can be seen around. Camp outside the village.

Day-3

Chimrat-Urgos, 14 kms On foot.

Trek upto Karpat along the left bank. Cross the bridge to follow the right bank till you reach the camping site at Urgos. Churput, Chamgut, Tingret and Gumba villages are on the way.

Day-4

Urgos-Khanjar, 15 kms On foot.

Cross the nullah at Challing village to reach the last village of this valley, namely, Khanjar. Local people go to Zangskar for trade pruposes.

Day-5

Khanjar-Gumba, 8 kms On foot.

Follow the left bank for some time. Trek to Gumba among meadows. Lots of alpine flowers can be seen in bloom. Blue poppy can be seen here in profusion. After fording two side nullah from Khanjar you reach Gyere Lama where remains of avalanche hit houses and fields can be seen.

Day-6

Gumba-Gangjuk, 10 kms On foot.

Ford side nullah. The climb to the next place of halt is very stiff. Camp at the snout, of the glacier. Scenic view of Gurhdhar and Great Himalayan ranges can be had from here.

Day-7

Gangjuk-Gangjuk II, 11 kms On foot.

Slog over the glacier to reach Tara sumdo La, altitude 5358 m. This is a very narrow pass. Descent from the pass is equally gruelling as you have to trek on loose moraine. Camp on the snout of the glacier.

Day-8

Gangjuk II-Thach, 12 kms On foot.

After crossing river Barsi trek down the boulder strewn path to reach grassy meadow area for camping. Shepherds with their herds can be seen there.

Day-9

Thach-Zangskar Sumdo, 14 kms On foot

Camp at the confluence of two nullahs.

Day-10

Mune-Padum, 14 kms On foot

From the gompa climb down a steep incline to the main track. Two hrs. trek brings you to Bardan gompa a kagyud-pa gompa famous for its 180 cm high mani prayer wheel. From this place a dusty motorable road leads to Padum (3650 m)
Bardan gompa was founded by Shabdru, who also founded Hemis gompa in Ladakh and later went to Bhutan. Padum is the administrative headquarters of Zangskar. Palace of the king of Zangskar is in ruins destroyed by the Dogras
