This is a moderately difficult and long trek over two high pass namely Baralacha La and Pangpo La

Name of Trek

KEYLONG TO KAZA OVER PANGPO LA

Period July-September
Duration 16 days
Day-1

Keylong-Baralacha, 74 kms By bus.

Visit Suraj Taal and Camp on the Pass.

Day-2

Pass-Kinlung, 12 kms On foot

Trek downstream Yunam fiver. There is one Sarai for shelter at this camping ground.

Day-3

Kinlung-Serchue, 13 kms On foot.

Trek along the right bank of the Yunam river on Manali-Leh highway. One may bathe in the hot water springs right on the bank of this river.

Day-4

Tser-Foot of pass, 8 kms On foot.

This is arduous climb. Very good view of Lingti plains is had from there. Interesting rock formations may be attributed to massive erosion.

Day-5

Serchue-Lungun, 12 kms On foot.

Trek along Tsarap nullah. The track is very steep & bouldery.

Day-6

Lungun-Tser, 12 kms On foot.

From Lungun follow right bank of the nullah. One may have to ford the nullah about five times before reaching the flat camping site on the right bank at Thachhung Ri or Tser. The nullah is surrounded by Siberian willow forest. Ibex, Bharal, marco polo sheep, marmots and wild ass may be seen around the Camp.

Day-7

Foot of pass-Foot of Glacier, 12 kms On foot.

Cross over this high pass, alti 17800 feet. Tread on the glacier and camp just below it on the left bank of the Prang Chu.

Day-8

Glacier camp-Kyatonullah, 11 kms On foot.

Descent is difficult. Camp just on the right bank of the Kyato nullah on a fiat patch surrounded by Caragana Shrub.

Day-9

Nullah-La Darcha, 12 kms On foot.

Follow right bank of Kyato nullah till its junction with the Spiti river. From there take the track to reach La Darcha famous for its fair in the month of July. La Darcha ground was the centre of barter trade between Tibetans and Spitans.

Day-10

La Darcha-Kibber, 12 kms On foot.

The climb is steep to this highest village in the world connected with road transport. Visit monastery at Kibbar.

Day-11

Kibber-Kaza, 8 kms On foot.

Follow the road to reach Kaza. On way visit the famous Kye monastery. For onward journey from Kaza see also Keylong to Kaza via Kunzom Pass.

Day-12

Kaza-Shichling, 12 kms On foot.

From Kaza follow the left bank of the Piti river. There is a PWD rest house at this place. Lots of poplars, willow and hippophae trees can be seen along the river. Snow cocks and blue sheep are found in abundance.

Halt at Shichling. Visit the famous Dankhar fort and monastery. In the past Dankhar used to be the capital of Spiti. Dankhar is situated on a high precipice that projects into the Spiti valley.

Day-13

Shichling-Poh, 15 kms On foot.

Follow the left bank of the river. There is a PWD rest house at Poh. Unlike other places in Spiti this village looks green.

Day-14

Poh-Tabo, 12 kms On foot.

Trek is easy along the Tabo nullah. Tabo has come to be known as the Ajantas of Himachal Pradesh. The gompa, built in 996 AD is situated just above Tabo village. Exquisite murals and wall paintings can be seen in the six-chambers here. The place is being prepared for stay of Dalai Lama after his retirement.
From Tabo catch the bus to reach Sumdo for onward journey to Kinnaur and Shimla.
